WWI names exhibition

Date: 8th November 2015

Time: 2.30pm-3.30pm

Venue: St Peter’s Church, Donadea

St Peter’s Church, Donadea will open Sunday 8th November, 2:30pm-3:30pm to families and visitors to commemorate participants in World War I.

Almost every Irish town and village saw local people leave 100 years ago to fight in World War I. Of the 300,000 who served with Irish regiments and medical staff from 1914 to 1918, about 49,400 died.

War memorial headstones appear in many cemeteries and graveyards across the garrison County of Kildare. Preliminary research indicates substantial numbers participated from the county with at least 800 were killed in action or died from wounds. Enlisting men recorded their birth town and sometimes family details. Most of the local volunteers from County Kildare enlisted at Devoy Barracks, Naas – where the County Council Offices now stand.

With nearly 100 years having passed since their deaths, St Peter’s Church, Donadea will open for an hour on Sunday to join communities around the world who will remember the sacrifices of the fallen and of those who made it home. There will be a small exhibition including names of servicemen from the general area and wider afield who participated in the war.

Visitors to the event can participate by contributing hand written details to the exhibition panels. It could be merely the name of a relative who served in the war, or any individual who was a veteran or indeed a short story relating to the war.
